Esztergom

The "western gate of the Danube Bend," Esztergom, is the centre of the Hungarian Roman Catholic Church. The city is also of historical significance. Saint Stephen, the first Hungarian king was born, crowned, and laid to rest in this town. He founded the archbishopric of Esztergom. The basilica, built in the 19th century, is the largest church in Hungary. The cathedral treasury houses Hungary's largest and most valuable ecclesiastical collection. The basilica is the oldest and one of the largest in the country. The Christian Museum exhibits the art objects of fervent art collector bishops. The royal palace of the Árpád dynasty kings, built in the 11th-12th centuries, later the archbishop's palace is just a few metres away from the cathedral, and the rooms still reflect an ancient grandeur. Its terrace enables us to survey the town below and view areas of Slovakia.

Tata

Tata is well known as the of waters. The town gets its name from the founder Tata or Tudeus of the benedictine abbey in Tata. Records from 700 years ago mention Tata as a settlement, tough the area had already been inhabited in the Bronze Age, The town lived its golden age during the reign of Kings Zsigmond and Mátyás Hunyadi in the count Eszertházy family. This period is well represented today by the buildings and the unique baroque face of the town.

Visegrád

The "real" scenic Danube Bend begins at Visegrád. "This is truly royal country!" clamied an English traveller in the last century, referring to the charming beauty of the landscape, extending up to Esztergom. The lower and upper castle of Visegrád, located at the foot of the steep rocks of the Visegrád Hills, was built in the 13th century. The ruins of the 15th-century Gothic-Renaissance royal residence are still stunning in their bauty. Besides the attraction of the monuments many visitors also come to see the spectacular panorama as seen from the citadel.

Szentendre

Szentendre is the southern gate of the Danube Bend. The town's tiny squares meandering streets, Serbian churches and baroque bourgeios buildings contribute to a uniquely picturesque Mediterranean ambience. Today Szentender is the town of museums. Many museums and galleries exhibit the works of artists who currently live in the artists' quarter established in the past century. Hungary's largest outdoor ethnographic museum is located less than 3 kms from the town centr, where the characteristic regions of Hungary are represented in original sorroundings showing the folk architecture, interior ornaments and way of life of the villages and towns. Szentendre is a cheerful town. The resturants, cafes, and little shops in the tiny streets leading to Fo Square welcome many guests all year round.

Budapest

The bustling metropolis, Budapest, is the heart of the country, with a population of two million. The magic of the capital lies in the fortunate combination of its ideal location, the charming beauty of nature, and humane arhitecture. Two thousand years ago the Romans founded the outpost Aquincum in the area, but the modern city was established only in 1873, with the merging of three separate towns, Buda, Óbuda, and Pest. The unique panorama of the city unfolds as we look around from the Citadel of Gellért Hill, or cross the Danube over the Chain Bridge, no wonder Budapest is registered a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Hilly Buda rises over the right bank of the river, crowned by the nedieval Castle District and the magnificent Royal Palace. The green gem of the gently winding silver river is Margaret Island. The economic, political, and financial centre of the city is Pest, spread out inthe flatland on the left side of the river, where beautiful buildings bulit before the turn of the century harmoniously complement the modern buildings of today.
